January, 1999 Newsletter

Dear Society Members,

As we end one year and begin another, we take time to reflect on what has been accomplished and what the new year has in store for our Society.
I would like to thank those Board Members who have helped make this year get off to a successful start.  I am thankful for all of you who have renewed your membership and those of you who have become new members.
We look forward to the New Year and to meeting you and for you to become active in our Society.  We need your ideas, your suggestions and your energies.
We look forward to 1999, the 40th year of the Monroe Historical Society.  Please be a part of the many programs we are planning.
On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to wish everyone a  happy, historic, and successful New Year.

Bob Tranzillo

Christmas Fair a HUGE Success

Many thanks to Rita Sparano for our very successful Christmas Fair in December.  Profits exceeded $4,000, a record high.  Rita and her committee of Millie Ohm and Pat Rychlik worked tirelessly on this event.  Thank you to all those members who volunteered with their donations of crafts and food, and their time to work during the fair hours. And a very  special thank you goes to John Sparano for all his help in putting up signs, transporting carloads of items, setting up, taking down, and numerous other details
This fair has always been one of our major fund raisers and under Rita's management has been more successful than ever before.  At the December board meeting, Rita did announce that she was stepping down as chairman of this event.  If anyone would like to take over this important chairmanship, please let us know.  Rita will still be available to help as will many other members who have worked on the fair in the past.

Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service

On November 22 and Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service was held at the Meetinghouse and was attended by approximately fifty people.  Father Skip Karscinski of St Jude Parish was the homilist.  The pump organ was played by Choir Director Linda Wesche Bespuda.  The Reverend Peter Allen of the Clergy Association said that he was very pleased with the service and thanks the Monroe Historical Society for opening the Meetinghouse for such an appropriate use..

Get Well Wishes

Our warmest get well wishes to Elma Jean Wiacek following her recent surgery.

Open Hearth Cooking Program

On March 21,  1999, from 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.,  Cheryl Compton and the Historical Society will sponsor a workshop in Open Hearth Cooking.  Those of you who attended the Tour of Homes last May will remember that Cheryl prepared a complete colonial dinner in the kitchen area of the Beardsley Homestead.  During this workshop you will learn how to start and manage a fire in the fireplace, use the beehive oven, and prepare a meal utilizing the hearth and the oven.  At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to sample all of the food that they have prepared.  Cost is $40.00 and enrollment is limited to eight people.  Please call 268-5511 if you would like to be included.

Web Site

Our new web site can be found at http://www.monroehistoricsociety.org.  It contains basic information about the Society and chronicles some of the work that has been done at the Beardsley Homestead.  Please let me know if there is anything you would like to see added to this site.  One of the advantages of the web is that it makes exchange of information with other historical organizations much easier.

Monroe Women's Club Craft Fair

Our presence at the Country Treasures Craft Show on November 15 was very successful.  We sold four coverlets, six books (Images of America), one cemetery book, two bags and two bottles.  We also took orders for six lithographs of the Monroe Center by David Merrill.  Our total sales for the day were over $600.

Natural Dyeing Workshops

In connection with our Hands-on-History program we are planning a series of workshops in natural dyeing open to both children and adults.  We will meet three times (spring, summer and fall) to take advantage of seasonal plants and dyestuffs.  Exact dates will be set later.  Please call Judy Standerford, 268-5511, if you are interested in attending any or all of these workshops.
