Our 1999 Fall Market Day was a very successful event. Many people toured the house to admire the recent renovations, the puppet show attracted a large audience of children and the antique cars were admired by everyone. All of our booths tag sale, Monroe Historical Society items, craft items, ice cream and apple crisp, bake sale and hands-on craft demonstrations were busy. Our net profit from the event was approximately $600. We hope to make this an annual fund-raising event which will also showcase the continuing work on the Beardsley Homestead.

Fruit and Nut Bread
The following recipe is from Millie Ohm. It includes a basic quick bread mix and several variations. We used this recipe for many of the breads donated to the bake sale for Fall Market Day.

Fruit and Nut Bread

Basic Mix
5 cups sugar
10 cups flour
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon baking powder
2 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 lb (4 cups) walnuts, chopped medium
Makes 5 large or 25 30 small loaves

General Directions
Start with:

2 large eggs
1/2 cup oil
3 cups mix

Choose one of the following variations and add:
1. Apple-Raisin
3/4 cup applesauce
1/2 cup raisins
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cloves
2. Banana
1 tsp vanilla
3 bananas (about 1 cup mashed)
3. Orange
2 T. grated orange peel
1/3 cup orange juice
Optionaladd golden raisins
4. Spiced Cranberry
1 cup canned whole-berry cranberry sauce
1 1/2 tsp grated lemon peel

Library Additions

Recent additions to our collection were the Monroe School Attendance Registers from 19121968. These volumes had been stored at Masuk and were about to be thrown away because of space constraints. Michele Oltra rescued them for us and they are now at the Beardsley Homestead. We are looking for back issues of the Monroe Courier (1960s and earlier) so that they can be microfilmed. We have several old editions but they are not complete.

Nick Bellatoni, State Archeologist

On Sunday, October 24, Nick Bellatoni presented a program on Native American history in Connecticut. He also spoke about several archeological sites in the area and offered to send us a map of archeological sensitive sites in and around Monroe.
