October, 1999 Newsletter

Dear Historical Society Member,

It's the start of our new year and we have many exciting events planned.  October 17 is Fall Market Days at the Beardsley Homestead and October 24 is a program by Nick Bellatoni, State Archeologist, at the Meeting House.  The dates for the Christmas Fair are December 3, 4, and 5.

As always, we are looking for volunteers in many different areas.  Please take a moment to complete the survey below by checking off areas of interest.  Then mail  it to Judy Standerford, 7 Winslow Terrace, Monroe,  or call her at 268-5511 with any questions or comments.

There are also some vacancies on our Board of Directors.  Anyone interested in filling one of these vacancies please call Nancy Zorena at 261-8554.  We invite you to volunteer your time, talents, and your knowledge of our town's history.

Archeology Program

Nick Bellatoni, the State Archeologist, will speak October 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the Meetinghouse.  His topic will be Native American archeological sites in the Monroe area. This program was postponed earlier in the year.

Schoolhouse Greeters

Anyone interested in welcoming school groups to the Old Schoolhouse, please contact Nancy Zorena at 261-8554.  It takes only a few minutes and Nancy has all the historical information that you need.

Christmas Fair

The Christmas Fair will once again be the first weekend in December.  The dates this year are December 3, 4 and 5.  We do not have a chairperson, but many people are working to make this event a success.  Rita Sparano will be leading a workshop to make evergreen mailbox decorations.  Please call her at 261-8897 for details.
In addition, if you have any of the following items to be decorated for the Christmas Fair -  sleds or old garden tools (hoes, rakes, shovels, etc.) please call 268-5511 to arrange for pickup.
If you have access to birch logs to make Yule Logs, please let us know.  Someone will be available to pick them up.
Handmade Christmas ornaments and baked goods are always our best sellers.  We will be calling members for donations closer to fair time.

Membership Renewals

Just a reminder that membership dues for the 1999-2000 year are due now. (Our year runs from September 1 - August 31.)  If  you haven't yet renewed, please do so now. Your dues help to sustain our organization.   Our largest expense is the maintenance of our three buildings.  This year we will be replacing the roof on the barn at the Beardsley Homestead.

Thank you

Thank you to the following people for making phone calls to publicize the Fall Market Day:  Lynn Renaud, Pat Arnold, Barbara Waite, Marie Lederer, Arlene Gondar, Brian Pattyson, Judy Standerford, Sue Cappucci, Millie Ohm, Carolyn Adelman, Madelyn Marshall, and Rita Sparano.

Collectibles

There will be a Nana's Attic table at both the Fall Market Day and at the Christmas Fair.  This has been so popular that we would like to make it a continuing project.  Visit this table to add to you country collection, or call 268-5511 if you have any items that you can donate.  Think of us when you are planning  your tag sale!

Donations

We are looking for the following items:
Screens for use with a slide projector and a large coffeepot to be used at the Meetinghouse.  Please call 268-5511 to arrange for pickup if you have any of these items.

Email and Web Page

We would like to have your email address   so that we can let you know about events and meetings that didn't make the newsletter.   Please email us through our web page at
http://www.monroehistoricsociety.org or at
geodesign1@aol.com.
We would also appreciate any suggestions for the web page.  Let us know what topics you are interested in seeing there.  The images of  old homes have been getting a very good response, and we hope to do more with old pictures.
